A parish may consist of several chapelries, churches, or several chapels of ease. Certain communities were so small that they didn't have a parish of their own, so they reported information to the chapelries, churches, or chapels of ease and then it would transfer to the nearby parish.
Sometimes there are gaps in the records for various reasons, such as the civil war. Often times, missing records was due to laziness or having being destroyed.
Most of us cannot travel to the record office ourselves so we depend on online resources. There are plenty of websites out there; some are subscription only, some are pay as you go, and some are free. As most of you are aware by now, I try to do everything free if I can.
First, I will list some of the paid subscription sites and pay as you go sites and then the free sites.
ScotlandsPeople - Find Statutory Registers, Old Parish Registers, Catholic Registers, Census Records, Valuation Rolls, Wills & Testaments, Coats of Arms, and more.
Ancestry.co.uk - Some of these indexs are free, but in order to be able to do a detailed job, a subscription would help. Try the 14 day FREE trial.
findmypast - Offers millions of parish records online from 1538 - 2005. This is a subscription site or you can pay as you go.
Parish Chest - A great website with lots of information. You will need to pay for each CD or booklet.
Medway Ancestors – This website is awesome! You can actually view the originals!
Familysearch.org – Compiled by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Contains many records and is an all time favorite of most researchers!
www.freereg.org.uk – offers over 25 million British baptisms, marriages and burials. The website is updated by volunteers and they are in constant need of volunteers, so maybe you would like to give back and help them out.
Cheshire Parish Register Project – contains information from 27 Cheshire Parishes as of March 2012
Online Parish Clerks - an extensive online collection! See the left side of the page for other parish clerk projects. It took me awhile to figure out how to maneuver around this site/sites. Just be patient.
Cornish (Cornwall) parish registers - Very simple to use and lots of information!
Sheffield Indexers – you'll find parish registers along with many other types of records, including school records, historical records, census records, etc...
I will add more as I find them! Happy hunting!
